PROJECT ROOM: Kathryn Lynch, City Grit
May 12 – Jun 3, 2022

New York, NY – Sears-Peyton Gallery is pleased to present City Grit, an exhibition of paintings by Kathryn Lynch in the Project Room. This exhibition contains three new paintings on paper and two on canvas.

Lynch is a painter not only of what she is experiencing, but what she knows. Even after moving upstate in 2021, she is still emphatically a city painter. City Grit features the cityscapes ingrained within her, textured night scenes unafraid of darkness and grit, contrasted with ethereal light. This show features new paintings on paper observed through the same vantage point, including multiple snapshots of a highly layered and vibrant environment. With a unique clarity to each work, Lynch paints trains and buses on crisscrossing bridges, tugboats, construction workers, taxis, and city lights in the distance.

In “round midnight'', the viewer confronts a single window, lit up in the darkest part of the night. Lynch illuminates the tree-lined street with streetlamps and taillights, giving the viewer the slightest indication of where she is. The painting's rich blackness leaves one engulfed in darkness, yet keenly aware of the everpresent life of the dense urban landscape. In the darkness of the night, we aren’t alone.

“When you walk down the same street everyday you walk with a mixture of remembering and forgetting, noticing and knowing.”
– Kathryn Lynch
