PRESS RELEASE
Michael Abrams, New World
Jan 11 – Feb 10, 2024
New York, NY— Sears-Peyton Gallery is pleased to present Michael Abrams: “New World”, an exhibition of new paintings. The exhibition will include paintings on canvas and panel made with many layers of translucent oil glazes in the luminous atmospheric style that Abram’s is known for.
Michael Abrams left New York City for the bucolic mountains of Vermont in 2008. After growing up in Rensselaer County, in a home overlooking the Hudson River Valley, the images of sprawling fertile land has remained imprinted in Abrams’s mind. Hovering above the river basin has also been a recurring theme in Abrams’s work. It is loaded with meaning, from historically, being the cradle of civilization to metaphorically, for life’s journey. In Abram’s life in Vermont, he lives among the vistas of the Green Mountains. The physicality of the terrain, the unique quality of light, and the richness of the atmosphere, are often quite striking in their radiance then become thick and obscuring at other times, have become pronounced and integral to his storytelling.
Abrams is inspired by the link between theology and nature that captivated the American landscape painters of the nineteenth century. His minimally bare landscapes seem to be at once recognizable destinations and intangible color fields. In this way, Abrams bridges the romanticism of the Hudson River School with the contemporary dialogue of abstraction.
Michael Abrams: “New World” is on view January 11 – February 10, 2024 at Sears-Peyton Gallery’s Chelsea location at 210 Eleventh Avenue.
