PROJECT ROOM: Don Maynard

New York, NY— Sears-Peyton Gallery is pleased to present Don Maynard’s solo exhibition in the Project Room. The encaustic works on paper Maynard is known for are hung alongside new three dimensional wall sculptures. Compositional themes, including crosses, grids, and architectural gesture plus an attunement to surface are consistent across mediums. Maynard’s exploration of markings and gestures are implemented using a centuries-old technique of working with molten waxes. Paintings become carefully built up surfaces – layer upon layer of texture – revealing subtle traces of symbols and graphic iconography. Various traditional and industrial materials create these highly textured surfaces.
Interested in light and the manipulation of space and form, Maynard is drawn to the aesthetic qualities intrinsic in the materials he uses, so that the work and the materials have meaning in themselves, both aesthetically and conceptually.
Don Maynard lives and works in Kingston, Ontario. His art practice includes painting, sculpture, and multi-media installations. Previous public art works include Stand of Birch, Archive and Fallen Star for the City of Ottawa, and Wave for the City of Toronto. He is the recipient of a Pollock-Krasner Foundation Grant and a Chalmers Fellowship. Previous solo exhibitions include Tidal Mass, and Franken Forest at the Agnes Etherington Art Centre in Kingston, and Franken Forest at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa. Maynard is represented by Newzones Gallery in Calgary, Alberta, and Sears-Peyton Gallery, New York City, New York. His works are in private and public collections at home and abroad.
Don Maynard’s exhibition is on view January 11 – February 10, 2024 at Sears-Peyton Gallery’s Chelsea location at 210 Eleventh Avenue. There is an evening reception January 11th from 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Exhibitions are open to the public Tuesday - Friday from 11:00 am – 5:00pm and Saturdays from 12:00 pm - 5:00pm.
