PRESS RELEASE
Andrew Zimmerman, To Cut
Sep 26 – Oct 26, 2024
New York, NY – Sears-Peyton Gallery is pleased to present a solo exhibition of Andrew Zimmerman’s new work. This exhibition is a further exploration of the juxtapositions at the heart of the artist’s work: the intersection between painting and sculpture and the tension between industrialized surfaces and natural materials.
The eight monochromatic paintings in the main gallery space exemplify the artist’s unique play with negative space and irregular edges. Wood cut with a band saw creates three dimensional forms, subtracting material but evoking the typically additive process of drawing.
In the Project Room, an installation entitled “Perspective”, combines twenty small works to make up a playful exploration of surface. In recent years, Zimmerman has pushed the scale of his work. This piece expands on this exploration by creating dynamic spaces left behind, vibrating with a palette that departs from the subtlety of the other works on view. In “Perspective” Zimmerman departs from the industrialized finish and mixes many types of paint. Some elements have raw wood, while others have acrylic and spray paint. As in the monochrome works, dynamic negative space activates the elements and their relationships with one another.
Andrew Zimmerman: To Cut is on view from September 26 – October 26, 2024. An opening reception for the artist will take place on September 26th from 5-7pm. Exhibition hours is Tuesday-Friday 11am-5pm and Saturday from 12pm-5pm. For more information or to request further images or information, please contact the gallery at info@searspeyton.com.
